Christmas, that time of year to celebrate with family, friends, co-workers, employees, clients – well, just about everyone!    And it’s time to honor these folks with a gift.   Here is a unique idea for these gifts:  Give your Mom a goat, give your kids a trio of bunny rabbits, give your wife, husband or significant other a cow, give your clients a flock of chicks, and give your employees an Ark (22 species, two by two).

No, they won’t have to worry about where to shelter their gift animal, what to feed it, or how to keep it healthy, because you, like so many others, are choosing to honor those near and dear to your heart by donating a gift of livestock and training through Heifer International.

Heifer International works with small holder farmers in more than 40 countries, providing gifts of livestock and training to empower self-reliance and ensure nutritional and economic security.   Since 1944 Heifer International has assisted more than 18 million families – 79 million people – move from poverty to prosperity with the help of its supporters.  Heifer project participant families are trained in eco-friendly agriculture and how to properly care for their livestock and living assets, to improve not only their lives, but their communities as well.

In turn, Heifer families agree to “Pass on the Gift,” by presenting the first female offspring of their gifted livestock – and the training in its care – to another family in the community.   With that, the gift of a single goat can soon become four goats, then eight goats, then 16 goats, helping even more families struggling daily to escape hunger and poverty.  This not only extends the impact of the original gift, it allows a once impoverished family to become donors and full participants in their community’s sustainable development.

When you honor those in your circles of family, friends and others, you are creating what I call a ‘Win-Win-Win-Win’ situation because:   You are giving a gift; someone is getting a gift, somewhere in the world a family is receiving a gift of an animal; and, you are introducing someone else to Heifer.

Heifer will even provide you with free Honor Gift Cards that you can give to those you have chosen to give the gift of animal.   And it is so easy to shop – just go to and everything is laid out on your screen.

I cannot think of a better gift at this special time of year.   We who are fortunate enough to reside in the United States, undoubtedly the richest country in the world, have a duty, a responsibility, an obligation, if you will, to help those born into less fortunate circumstances.   When over half the world, more than 3.5 billion people, live on less than $2 a day, the gift of an animal means so much!

May you and your circle of friends, family and others have a blessed Holiday Season!

With much hope,

David Keeton

We who are fortunate enough to reside in the United States, undoubtedly the richest country in the world, have a duty, a responsibility, an obligation, if you will, to help those born into less fortunate circumstances.  More than half, over 3 billion people in the world, live on less than $2 per day.  This is less than a cup of Starbucks latte coffee, less than a gallon of gasoline, the same as two pulls on the dollar slot machine in Vegas.

Heifer International, a 69 year old non-profit group is dedicated to ending hunger throughout the world.  Heifer donates animals (cows, ducks, chickens, water buffaloes, goats, llamas, etc – 22 species in all) to villagers in developing countries, as well as to Americans in 13 States.

They then teach the recipients how to care for the animals, providing shelter, food and health needs.  They are also taught how to use the by-products (the milk, the eggs, the wool, the manure, etc.) to benefit them and their families for the present generation as well as for the next.

And, through a program called ‘Passing On The Gift,’ the recipients of the donated animals are obligated to pass on the first female offspring to his or her neighbor.  Through their donations, eventually the entire village community benefits.

A Christmas gift from Heifer is the perfect gift for those people on your list who seem to have everything.   Your gift will help provide a family in need with a starter flock of 10-20 chicks;  alpacas prove the perfect fit for families in the Andes;  you can sweeten the Holidays with a gift of honeybees, etc.

Please visit the website: to discover how your Christmas gifts to families in need throughout the world will change their lives forever.

President Bill Clinton says it best:  “Today, Heifer is recognized around the world for its effective approach to ending poverty.  Because of Heifer, hundreds of thousands of families are able to feed their children and give them a better future.  Heifer provides much more than food – it brings hope and triumph of the human spirit.”

Heifer operates in 51 countries!  Here is a sample of the animals  (22 species in all) and some of the countries where families are helped.

Events, events, events!!!

Friday, August 10th, 2012

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce of which D C Keeton Home Improvements is a member, presented their annual ‘Hero’s of Hollywood’ luncheon  at the Taglyn Cultural Center, with all proceeds benefiting various non-profits throughout the Hollywood area.  Honored was Mr. Hugh Hefner of Playboy Enterprises for his two donations totaling over one million dollars to preserve the Hollywood sign.   Also honored were the police officers who were responsible for preventing a major disaster at the corner of Vine and Sunset Blvd. when they were able to put down an individual who had taken to the streets firing his gun at random passing cars as well as pedestrians.

David presented to La Crescenta teacher, Lorena Leininger, a special award plaque from Heifer, International for spearheading a fundraising campaign for the past school year among her 5th – 9th grade students raising over $21,000 in a short two months.  Lorena had previously traveled to Honduras with Heifer and saw just how important the work of this world-wide non-profit was in relieving poverty and hunger.  Upon returning she became dedicated to helping in any way possible to assist in Heifer’s efforts and the results were just astounding!

D.C. Keeton Home Improvements along with Heifer, International both had booths at the annual LGBT Festival held in West Hollywood in late June.   Over 100,000 attend the Festival each year and both booths garnered numerous connections with participants.

D. C. Keeton Home Improvements purchased a booth for Heifer, International at the Largest Mixer, a semi-annual event held at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles.   The event which is geared towards promoting business -to-business connections received over 3,000 visitors.   Heifer’s presence was to let businesses know about this outstanding non-profit and how their company could participate, either by outright donations or giving their clients and employees Christmas gifts of animals for villagers in developing countries rather than some other less meaningful item.   The gift of animals also make great birthday, graduation, wedding, etc., gifts as well.

David was the co-chairman for the Silent Auction for the annual Chef’s Invasion, an annual fundraiser held by GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).   Celebrities from the Hollywood community attended and promoted the important work for this dedicated non-profit.   Fran Drescher was the celebrity hostess for the event, and Lou Diamond Phillips was an honoree guest.   Frenchie Davis, recording artist and recent contestant on American Idol, Million Dollar Listing host, Madison Hildebrand, six-time Emmy Award winner, and head writer for the annual Oscar program, Bruce Vilanch, also were in attendance.  Chris Crary, contestant from Top Chef participated in the Invasion, as well as Campanile head chef, Michael Luna.   Over $69,000 was raised on a summer afternoon from more than 400 attendees.

D. C. Keeton Home Improvements built two replica houses for the Heifer, International exhibit at the Orange County Fair, one representing Uganda, the other Thailand.  The houses were erected in the Big Red Barn at the Fairgrounds.  Over 1 million people attend the Fair each year during its 5 week run and Heifer has been a major exhibitor for the past 5 years, with many of the Fairs’ attendees stopping by the exhibit to learn about the important work of this outstanding world wide non-profit.
